California grows about 99% of the country's walnuts every year.

  • California produces almost all of America's walnuts, but we also produce approximately 3/4 of internationally traded walnuts. Walnuts grow well in a variety of California regions because of their deep fertile soils and warm temperate climates. California's dry walnut growing period prevents diseases, while irrigation systems allow farmers to provide enough water for healthy walnuts.

  • There are more than 30 varieties of walnuts produced commercially.

  • Walnuts have been cultivated in California since the 1700's when Franciscan missions planted walnut trees, but commercial production began in the late 19th century with orchards in Southern California. California farmers today are focused on producing walnuts using smart water management. Learn more about how California's farmers manage water.
